Based on our year-end survey, Montclarions were simply eclectic when asked about their favorite magazines, books and authors. You shared interests in the economy, politics, tech, home-nesting and a bit of pop culture for good measure.
Montclair’s Favorite Reads
- Top Magazines – When asked about favorite mags, you picked The Economist, Scientific American, Sunset, Maxim and Star. All-time favorites also included People and Outside. None of the other newsweekly, business or fashion titles made the cut.
- Top Fiction – Here you liked the blockbusters, topped by The Twilight Saga, Harry Potter, and The Da Vinci Code. Your all-timers were also hits like Love Story, Even Cowgirls Get The Blues and In Cold Blood. Wow, you really avoid those literary classics from school.
- Top Non-Fiction – During the aughts, non-fiction favorites were Freakonomics, Fast Food Nation and America. Your all-time toppers included The Soul Of A New Machine, Into Thin Air and Generations. These are all interesting selections, without a standard memoir in the bunch!
- Top Authors – Your author picks weren’t tied directly to favorite books, but they did reflect writers from the past decade or two. Your top authors were David Sedaris, Neal Stephenson, David McCullough, J.K. Rowling, and Michael Lewis. Do we detect a slight Oakland bias with Lewis?
These “best reads” were naturally biased, coming from Montclair neighbors taking our entertainment survey. You contributed a long list of titles there, with only a handful receiving multiple mentions. We haven’t read some of the books picked above, and feel gently pushed to give ’em a try.
P.S. But wait, there’s more. Some Montclair survey results have not been revealed – like musicians and local eats – so there’s still time to make your suggestions here.
