Should we commune virtually, and have a social network to call our very own?  Check out the brand new place to share things – right here.

Today in Montclair limits the two-way conversation, due to the blog format.  We find something interesting to share almost every day, and are amazed by the traffic from Montclarions and other Oaklanders.  You send over all kind of ideas and questions, and I try to post items based on what’s interesting to you – but that’s only one posting a day.

Where do you go to ask a quick local question?  It feels like our virtual options are limited today.  Montclair Safety (MSIC) runs a Yahoo group that focuses on safety and crime matters.   Yelp provides user-contributed reviews about restaurants and some retail shops.  There seems to be a gap here.

Montclair-Social-Site

Let’s try out a real Montclair social network, where anything goes.  We just set up this site – http://montclairoak.ning.com – and encourage you to join and post messages to everyone.  It’s a pretty simple way to share questions, comments, events or even photos.  You even have “your own” pages to use.

Right now, your faithful Montclair blogger is there with a few others – and I’m officially rolling out the welcome mat.  Remember this social network succeeds if you and your neighbors have reasons to use it.  I’ll report back here about what happens…stay tuned.

More Info:  Check out the specific resources on the site, through this quick tour.  Or learn more about how to sign up here.

    RE: Montclair Carpool Possibility…
Anyone not sure about riding with strangers in a ‘casual carpool’ should read the new book, “The CASUAL COMMUTER – Riding With You On Your Way to Work”. It offers funny and thoughtful descriptions of people and situations you can encounter. And you realize the ride can be very entertaining, as is the book! The book is available in both hardback & paperback at http://www.thecasualcommuter.com, as well as Amazon and Barnes&Nobel.

I like keeping connected to most-things Oakland, especially to an area that I frequent. Montclair has always cracked me up a little bit, sometimes pretending it’s not Oakland. Hey, it is the gateway to spectacular Redwood Park.

PS, I am a coach of a local youth rugby club, Oakland Warthogs, http://www.oaklandwarthogsrfc.com We are free to boys enrolled in any Oakland school, 8th-grade through 12th. It’s a rough game but lots of fun as we compete against some of the best high school talent in the country. Rugby has also progressed to the point where it’s helping to get kids into college. Plus, they make friends they will have for a long time. Come learn a fun sport. Email me at hirepimike@gmail.com Thanks for this blog.
